Why we need to protect the oceans

Date

Welcome to my corner of the internet,

In my previous posts, I have talked about companies that are helping in the conservation, protection, and restoration of the wild beauty and biodiversity of our planet. So today, I would like to talk to you about our great ‘big blue’, the ocean, and the importance of its conservation.

The other day, I watched the documentary A Plastic Ocean, which showcases the latest scientific advancements, demonstrating how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break down into tiny particles that enter the food chain, where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in the fatty tissues of shellfish and, ultimately, consumed by us. In other words, it’s a documentary that shows you the harsh reality of the state of our oceans, and I won’t deny that I cried and almost vomited when I saw that there are animals that confuse microplastics for food!! And did you know that according to a study conducted in 2022 by the University of Vrije, Amsterdam, microplastics were found present for the first time in human blood samples? So, if you didn’t know yet, let’s dive into the importance of why oceans are so crucial.

Somewhere, I read that the ocean is like the ‘superhero’ of the planet, and what a great truth that is!! Did you know that apart from being full of life and giving us life, regulating our climate, and keeping everything in balance?

Firstly, they are a source of life: Picture this: the ocean is like a bustling city, with millions of creatures big and small living together in harmony. From playful dolphins to colorful coral reefs, there’s a whole world beneath the waves. And guess what? Tiny superheroes called phytoplankton produce more than half of the oxygen we breathe. So yeah, without healthy oceans, we’d be in trouble!

Secondly, Climate Sidekick: Our oceans are like the planet’s air conditioner, helping to keep things cool when it gets too hot. They soak up a ton of heat and carbon dioxide, kind of like a giant sponge. This not only keeps our planet comfy, but it also helps regulate our weather, from sunny days to stormy nights. Plus, ocean currents are like nature’s delivery service, bringing nutrients and good vibes to marine life all around the world.

Thirdly, Carbon Crusaders: Did you know that oceans are superstars when it comes to fighting climate change? They suck up a bunch of carbon dioxide, acting as a massive carbon sink. It’s like they’re giving the atmosphere a big ol’ hug! But here’s the thing: they can only take so much. With all the extra CO2 we’re pumping out, our oceans are starting to feel the heat, leading to ocean acidification and putting our marine friends in danger.

So… Our oceans are more than just a beautiful backdrop for beach selfies: they are the unsung heroes of our planet. By protecting and valuing our oceans, we not only save whales and coral reefs but also safeguard our own future.

So let’s all do our part to keep our oceans clean, healthy, and full of life. After all, we’re all in this together, riding the waves of this incredible oceanic adventure called life! 🌊💙

Cheers to a greener world and new beginnings,
